Hidden Sword Martial Arts is a full service martial arts program taught in the Roanoke Recreation Center in Roanoke TX.   We offer classes in “American” TKD/Karate for children and teens and our adult program focuses on Presas Arnis, which is a blended system comprised of Modern Arnis and Kombatan Arnis.    We also offer instruction in Kobudo which is used as a bridge system between our advanced students in the American TKD program and students in the Presas Arnis program.  Kobudo is the study of Okinawan based weapons such as sai, tonfa, bo (staff), kama (sickle), and nunchaku.

American TKD/Karate

Our American TKD program uses the Chungi patterns of the International Tae Kwon Do Federation (ITF), although we are not affiliated with the ITF nor any governing body from Korea.  In the advanced ranks the students learn drills and training concepts inspired by other arts such as the Filipino martial arts, Thai Boxing, JKD, and combatives where they relate to the self defense (not competition) side of the art.

Presas Arnis

Presas Arnis is a blended system combining the teachings of the late GM Remy Presas (Modern Arnis) and his younger brother the late GM Ernesto Presas (Kombatan Arnis) into one system.   Modern Arnis is  self defense system that modernized the classical Filipino Martia Arts (FMAs) and was also influenced by GM Remy’s study of Small Circle Jujitsu;  Modern Arnis focuses on single stick and empty hand with a smaller emphasis on double stick training.   Kombatan teaches double stick, single stick, espada y daga (long and short weapons together or stick and knife) , knife, and empty hand.

Kobudo

Kobudo is the study of the weapons associated with Okinawa; i.e. sai, bo (staff), nunchaku (flail), tonfa (rice grinder handle), and kama (sickle).  Once again we teach a blended system, meaning we teach a system that was inspired by selected kata from Okinawa and Japan as we were taught by our American instructors; although we claim no direct lineage or transmission back to Okinawa/Japan.   We also adapt training drills and concepts from our background in the FMAs and translate them to these weapons as well.

In closing

Hidden Sword is a progressive school, which believes in cross training in multiple arts as well as with other schools and instructors in order to broaden our students training experience.  The instructors at Hidden Sword have helped create local and state wide training groups such as the Metroplex Arnis Players Alliance (MAPA), and the Texas Modern Arnis Coalition (TMAC) in order to advance the FMAs and our skill in them.  We also belong to and train with the AKATO (American Karate Tae Kwon Do organization).    You can find Hidden Sword on Facebook, as well as MAPA and TMAC, and we are on You Tube as well.

I have had the pleasure of training with (mostly learning from) Mark at various training camps/seminars over the years. Despite not actually being a student of Mark’s, he has always gone to great lengths to help me in every way possible. Mark’s passion for teaching, his personable nature and his vast knowledge of Filipino (and other) martial arts would serve any aspiring martial arts student in their learning and training pursuits.

I have two kids enrolled in the Hidden Sword Martial Arts program. The first has been training with Master Lynn for 5 years. He began as a 7 year old in the American TWD/ Karate Program. Two years ago he began training in the Modern Arnis Program as well. He has had not only excellent instruction from Master Lynn, but from his assistant instructors as well. Each instructor brings valuable insight. My son has also had the opportunity to train with some of the best Grand Masters in the country through the different seminars Master Lynn has made accessible to his students. It has been amazing to watch as he learns so many different concepts from the different martial arts programs and how they all fit together. The younger of my kids started his training a year ago, also at the age of 7. He was excited to finally start going to class as a student and his enthusiasm has not ebbed. I know he will continue to look forward to each class and thrive here just as his brother has.

My son and I take Arnis together at Hidden Sword. I’ve really enjoyed the increased focus and development from my son. I am especially appreciative at how well Mark works with my 11 yr old, showing patience. Another thing I really like is how the instructors bring diverse martial arts backgrounds into the instruction. Gives different perspectives.

I began training with Master Mark Lynn as a member of his HSMA Instructor Development Course in February, 2017. My training partner and I make a three hour drive from the Oklahoma City metro area at least once a month to train with Master Lynn and his Black Belt instructors.

Master Lynn’s decades of training and teaching the Filipino Martial Arts are evident in every training session he conducts. I have some experience in other FMA’s but had never worked with an instructor with such a comprehensive base of knowledge.

The Black Belt level instructors that he has promoted prove the quality of his teaching and training methodologies. Very well grounded conceptually and demonstrating a high level of technical expertise, they would be a credit to anyone’s organization. All of the instructors are good at helping students grasp the “why”, not just the “how-to” aspects of the art.

I am fortunate to be able to use Master Lynn’s Presas Arnis curriculum as I launch my own program in central Oklahoma. A well thought out, considered, orderly progression that helps students make regular, measurable progress.

In summary, Master Mark Lynn is an excellent teacher who produces very good students. Don’t miss the opportunity to train with him!
